Voices Lifted in Sacred Worship
Music has occupied a central place in Christian worship from the earliest days of the Church. Throughout the history of Christianity, hymns, chants, and sacred songs have served not merely as artistic expressions, but as profound acts of worship, prayer, and proclamation. The Scriptures themselves testify to the importance of music in the life of God's people, from the songs of the Psalms to the heavenly worship described in the Book of Revelation. Music has the unique ability to elevate the human spirit, deepen faith, and unite believers in the common experience of worship.
"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything."— Plato
In the tradition of Eastern Christianity, sacred music assumes an especially significant role. The liturgy, enriched by prayers, hymns, chants, and scriptural proclamations rooted deeply in biblical and theological truth, forms the heart of communal worship. The Church Choir, therefore, holds a sacred and irreplaceable responsibility in preserving and presenting this rich liturgical heritage with reverence, devotion, and excellence. Through sacred music, the choir not only beautifies worship but also helps the congregation enter more fully into the mystery and experience of God's presence.
The primary mission of the Church Choir is to enrich the worship experience, especially during the Holy Qurbana, and to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ through music. Sacred songs guide believers in their spiritual journey, strengthen their faith, and lead the entire congregation into deeper worship and communion with God. Christian tradition has long recognized a profound connection between music and heavenly worship. The Book of Revelation portrays angels continuously singing praises before the throne of God, reminding believers that earthly worship is, in many ways, a participation in the eternal worship of heaven itself.
Recognizing the vital importance of sacred music in worship and spiritual formation, the Mar Thoma Church established the Department of Sacred Music and Communication as a dedicated ministry to nurture, preserve, and promote the rich musical heritage of the Church. The Department provides leadership, guidance, and training in liturgical music, choir ministry, hymnology, and Christian communication. Through its various programmes, workshops, publications, and training initiatives, the Department continues to strengthen congregational worship and inspire generations of worship leaders, musicians, and choir members across the Mar Thoma Church.
